In the PART 2: of this valuable series of article tutorials we`ll be looking at National Hunt statistics. The core aim being to help you make better informed decisions when betting on this unique sport.
PART 2. National Hunt Statistics
Non-handicap races such as Novice hurdles and Novice chases produce a high percentage of wining favourites throughout the national hunt season.
In fact, at some courses the win percentage can be as high as 40 to 48%, which is outstanding. It is possible to selectively back certain favourites and trainer trends to make a profit.
Having said that, it should be noted that the odds available on most of the so called certs` are often absurdly low offering very limited value for backers. Instead look for trading angles on Betfair.
Novice Hurdles and Novice Chases are often dominated by the best bread horses from the top jumps stables. However it is often some of the smaller yards which land the biggest gambles. Unfortunately spotting these coups isn`t easy, and an intimate knowledge of these smaller yards methods is required in order to spot them.
Season Planner
It’s often said that poor planning leads to poor performance. Therefore it should come as no surprise that the best prepared punters are often the most successful. Even though they don’t know in advance which horses will be entered into specific races; they will have a strategic awareness of the many valuable strands of interconnecting information such as: UK race course characteristics, Profitable Trainer Trends, Profitable Trainer Jockey combinations, Major Race dates and so on.
Ground conditions
Obviously there is more rain in the Autumn and Winter than in the Summer, although at times I do wonder. More rain = softer ground, ideal jumping conditions. Having said that there will be days during the winter National Hunt season when rain fall is substantial, meaning the going can quickly change from soft to soft/heavy or heavy.
Either way certain horse won’t be suited to this testing ground, especially heavy going, which leads to some strange results and this is when your likely to see big priced winners going in.
It really does pay to profile horses accurately, i.e. when the going is declared heavy look for runners which have shown a distinct preference for that type of ground, these are the animals that will still be plodding in the mud when the supposed jolly has tamely surrendered.
