Being selective is the biggest advantage you have in racing, use it to maximize profits and only get involved when conditions are in your favor.
When the Jumps season is in full swing concentrate on Jumps meetings only.
When the Flat season is in full swing concentrate on flat meetings only.
At present you should be preparing to focus your efforts on flat racing. With summer evenings approaching that means more racing to look at, so specialization is the key. Nobody can hope to assess 4 or even 5 race cards a day objectively. Two cards should really be your limit. Be ruthless and try to eliminate races which are difficult to assess, this will allow you to focus on races that are the right shape for betting in
By Focusing on just one type of racing in any given day we are maximizing our ability to make informed decisions accurately. We are not trying to chop and change which can lead to confusion and that means costly mistakes. Trying to find lays in all 3 race codes in one day is not advisable.
A good place to start is to look for potentially false-favourites, for example…
- Horses contesting very competitive races
- Horses trying something for the first time, such as debutants
- Horses racing outside their favored conditions
- Hyped horses that are simply favourite because of the stables reputation
- Horses un-raced since last season
- Horses racing at very tough courses
Never forget the golden rule – “If in doubt don’t bet” there will be plenty more races to look at. Remember if you can’t spot any negatives or serious opposition to your potential selection there probably isn’t any. Every time I employ this simple method it saves me a fortune in wasted stakes.
If you lose your “selected bets” for the day, no more bets. Carry on betting and you are chasing loses which is the quickest way to turn a profitable week into a losing one. Tomorrow is another day and there is racing seven days a week in the UK. There will be plenty more opportunities to profit from, but not necessarily on the same day. Patience, observation and planning will regain the winning thread sooner if not later. A good night’s sleep will refresh the mind and help you to accept the previous day’s losses. Each new day will present new betting opportunities to re-gain the winning thread.
Advantages of the specialist approach…
- Specializing on a few specific races is less stressful than randomly betting on tons of races
- Your emotions won’t be on an up and down rollers coaster ride through out the day
- Staying calm and sticking to the plan will mean your betting decisions are far more effective than those of stressed out punters that overplay the market, who incidentally will find themselves chasing loses regularly
- This approach will improve your long-term chances of success

Preparation is the key to success, like anything else in life learn to have patience and build your skill gradually. It’s always advisable to test any any new methods before jumping straight in, if you do decide to put your cash down make sure and keep stakes to the Betfair minimum of 2 quid, that way any mistakes or loses will be very manageable and you definitely won’t lose your shirt.
Remember profit is profit, an accumulation of small profits add up to make bigger ones. Small and cautious is the way to do things, not big and dangerous. Keep things in perspective and you won’t get your betting fingers well and truly burnt.
